Tandem calls for support from all parties for safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health services.

Sign today if you share our vision for a mental health sector where:

  • Mental health services are safe for all.
  • Investment is made to deliver a comprehensive and effective mental health system, that includes re-building our community mental health sector to provide preventative and therapeutic services for the 90,000 Victorians who need it outside the clinical system or the NDIS.
  • Families, friends and other supporters of consumers are respectfully included in the recovery journey in services.
  • Providing informal care doesn’t prevent you from living your own life to the full.

Thank you.

Your messages of support

I'm signing because as the Mother and sole long term Carer for for my daughter who has a severe Mental Illness, I passionately endorse the the Tandem vision for urgent revision and significant improvements in current Services to the Mentally Ill and their families and supporters. The inadequacies of the current system means that lives are at risk.

Virginia, 3355.

I'm signing because Australia is in desperate need of a mental health system that can service all who need it for as long as they need it. Victoria has the chance to make a difference this weekend at the polls. Our first step is a Royal Commission and our next step is government funding.

Arlene, 3032.

I'm signing because our mental health system has been an absolute mess for many years now.

Sandra, 3608.

I'm signing because I suffer from a mental illness and cant access services because I'm over 65.

Susan, 3136.

I am signing the petition because my daughter has a schizophrenia disorder and is very unwell she is paying $450 a week for a rental property has 3 children under 10 . The funding for the services she was connected to has been cut, because the NDIS is taking over. But she has been refused that funding.

Barb, 3158.

I'm signing because I have first hand experience with this issue and agree that major changes are needed.

Janet, 3824.

I'm signing because my daughter and our family are currently suffering because of the lack of investment in the Mental Health sector.

Fiona, 3149.

I'm signing because mental health is everyone's business and the Government's responsibility to fund so that all Victorians' can access the services the need, where and when they need them.

Karen, 3140.

I'm signing because consumers and carers are not second class citizens and should not be treated as if they are.

Peter, 3171.

It’s time we had a mental health system that truly provides the necessary safe services for people when they need them.

Michelle , 3107.

I'm signing because I’m tired of trying to work with a broken system to care for my family and a son who lives with a serious, long term mental illness. We need action now before more of us fall over.

Toni, 3145.

I'm signing because I work in mental health and I see families and individuals suffering every day as our mental health system continues to fail them

Sandra, 3556.

I'm signing because I care. The status quo in the mental health system adversely impacts on those living with mental illness and their carer . A lame system with the retention of powerful interests is unacceptable. (I am a Victorian)

Jennifer, 6000.

I'm signing because the current "system" is a resounding failure, propped up by a cotradictory and family exclusive Mental Health Act, which does not provide ANY safety for mental health clients

Vivienne , 3165.

I'm signing because I care for a son living with psychosis and have worked in the public mental health system for over 30yrs.

Paul Kenneth, 3551.

I'm signing because I want meaningful and sustained reform to the mental health services that are essential to the well being of our community.

Stasia, 3055.

I'm signing because I believe we urgently need more responsive, safer, and better funded community mental health services in Victoria with greater recognition of the important role carers play in our loved ones' lives.

M, 3067.

I'm signing because I believe the system is broken

Jane, 3084.

I'm signing because I'm sick of watching my father fall through the cracks of an underfunded, broken system. The services and support he requires are only accessible once hospitalisation is the only option. After fighting for his right to be included in the NDIS he has managed to build a small support system around himself. But this is not enough, and it is not fair that children of parents with a mental illness are being forced to fill the void of ineffective or non-existent community mental health services. The government has a duty to our communities to provide more and better support, both for individuals with a mental illness and the family and friends who support them.

Breanna, 3029.

I'm signing because I'm a carer who attended NDIS Mental Health conference yesterday. It was clear carers and "consumers" were not heard and in fact shut down in some cases. Until those suffering with mental ill health are listened to the system can't possibly become effective. It's just political and about keeping the current medical model alive (even though it's failing terribly in most cases). Please look at research from Professor Diana Rose. Brilliant information

Jo, 3802.

I'm signing because I believe Victoria deserves a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system

Lois, 3188.

I'm signing because the loved one I care for and I have experienced many distressing situations in the mental health system and our needs and opinions have been commonly ignored.

Susan, 3192.

I'm signing because all Victorian families deserve access to a safe, funded, inclusive and equitable mental health system.

Maria, 3137.

I'm signing because the resources that have been taken from the community mental health sector to fund NDIS have stripped capacity form the system, putting more pressure on acute mental health services and families who actually need ore support. Good funding where it's needed will save us lots of taxpayer money and human heartbreak

Carol, 3072.

I'm signing because I believe that family and friends pay an integral part of a person's recovery and this needs to be recognised.

Jo, 3551.

I'm signing because Victoria needs ongoing funded mental health system

Tim, 3068.

I'm signing because it's unfair people have to end their lives because the lack of support in the system.

Natalie, 3803.

I'm signing because I'd like to see mental health services for kids with autism too.

Monique , 3163.

As a person with a lived experience I am so glad that Tandem have this petition so that we all can have access to a mental health system that is caring, kind and compassionate and one that is truly person centered.

Dominic , 3199.

I'm signing because as a sole Carer of my adult son who lives with compound mental and physical ailments I want him to have access to services that will help him to become a positive contributor to the community in which we live.

Robin, 3199.

I'm signing because I'm a consumer and a community worker, and too many people aren't getting the support they need and deserve.

Michele, 3128.

I'm signing because I strongly believe that Victoria definitely deserves a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system.

Mary, 3044.

I'm signing because a well-funded mental health system benefits everyone in our society and saves people from lives of misery and dependency.

Tessa, 3066.

I'm signing because as a carer I feel like I need to be supported just like my sons with a disability need to be supported. My mental and physical health is as important as my son's. By the government supporting me, hopefully, I will not need a carer myself.

Tricia, 3156.

I'm signing because too many people are suffering alone in silence.

Lyn, 3690.

I'm signing because the system is failing us all at present. Those with mental illness as well as the carers and families are in desperate need of assistance

Eunice, 3765.

I'm signing because Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses yet there are so few beds allocated & not nearly enough expertly trained clinicians to give effective help. Caring for someone with an Eating Disorder is truly harrowing as the parents/carers are often the best hope of leading their loved one towards recovery. We bare the brunt of the emotional, physical & financial burden these illnesses cause with little Government assistance in what can be very lengthy, challenging & life-threatening mental disorders. Protecting our loved ones from self-harm, suicide attempts, starvation & malnutrition complications, while dealing with a patient who refuses to eat (from fear) or does not want to get well is terrifying & exhausting. More needs to be done to support families & carers of these young people affected by these biological brain disorders, which are not a choice but may be triggered by something in their environment

Christine, 3032.

I'm signing because mental health matters

Beth, 3094.

I'm signing because all Australians deserve better mental health care.

Cait, 3071.

I'm signing because mental health needs more funding. All mental health services need more staff. Caring for and trying to access help for my daughter who is suffering from mental ill-health has taken a toll on the whole family. More support for the mentally ill will help the whole community. The workers in mental health do a wonderful job but there are not enough of them and not enough facilities.

Maria, 3918.

I'm signing because its for my own mental health needs & requirements to be met plus support me as a sole care giver for my son.

Sue, 3216.

I'm signing because our current Mental Health System cannot cope effectively with adults suffering addiction. Places like EPARCS do not have sufficient funding to provide effective activities and preventative programs to help clients and many are discharged when they are not ready. We desperately need better residential facilities / housing for people who do function well but need some support to learn to live independently. We need more places like the HAVEN , in Frankston. We do not need SRS's and institution like facilities which are depressing and can be detrimental to the recovery of a person suffering mental health issues. Most SRS's are independently run and are filthy and depressing!

Lorraine, 3918.

I'm signing because I fear the wellbeing of consumers and carers who do not qualify for the NDIS and the lack of community supports will further overload the clinical system.

Paula, 3134.

I'm signing because I believe Victoria deserves a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system.

judith, 3187.

I'm signing because Victoria needs a better standard of mental health care.

Peter, 3171.

I'm signing because MH services in Victoria are in crisis. Increased pressure is on Families and carers. We need a safe, funded and inclusive mental health system.

Kathy , 3134.

I'm signing because my daughter has a long term psychiatric illness and needs more support.

Judith, 3204.

I'm signing because the mental health care system in Australia is broken. Way back to the 90s Burdekin Report, we’ve been waiting, waiting, waiting for substantial improvement being established and delivered. Now I’ve lost patience. Fix it now.

Toni, 3145.

I'm signing because mental health affects everyone and the services should be for everyone!

Kelly, 3067.

I'm signing because the impact of mental illness in my family has been huge and as a young carer the social disadvantage and difficulties have had a lasting effect. One parent affected by severe mental health and traumatic hospitalisations and I have struggled with my own mental health, my financials, my study, maintaining my employment. I had a pension card since I was 22 and accessing community health long term and regularly. This was preventable at the acute stage, instead of falling through the cracks and needing police involvement. Not enough coordinated work by key clinicians to work with children as hidden carers and build /strengthen family capacity. Better provisions of care and working with families is desperately needed- so more people who are children of a parent requiring extended hospitalization do not end up like me- excluded from participation and involvement and with a diagnosis of complex trauma, BPD, anxiety and depression because the system failed to address these 10 year issues earlier. We need funding and innovative models of care that truely work with families and carers instead of paying lipservice to it. One parent affect by mental illness. 3 children with long-term mental health issues and difficulties sustaining participation in secondary and finishing tertiary studies, and maintaining meaningful employment.

Jessica, 3067.

I'm signing because I believe mental health is severely under funded. Many people fall through the cracks thanks to shut-downs of supporting organisations due in part to the introduction of the NDIS. This has been a disaster for many people who are mentally unwell, but don't meet the criteria for the NDIS.

Aime, 3216.

I'm signing because as a family we are suffering terribly because of my daughter's mental illness and lack of support provided by the Public Mental Health System. There is a severe shortage of Acute Beds in all Major Victorian Hospitals and this combined with a lack of investment in staffing in all areas of Mental Health makes this a real tragedy for many people.

Fiona, 3149.

I'm signing because as the mother of a son diagnosed with Schizophrenia we 100% need these improvements made to our Mental health system.

Cheryl, 3188.

I'm signing because Victoria's Mental Health system is broken. People with mental illness deserve a first class mental healthcare system. The burden placed on carers is intolerable.

Pauline , 3926.

I'm signing because recovery occurs in a family or community context. Creative choices and preventative supports need to be alongside clinical options. Want a coordinated and flourishing community MH sector

Rose, 3175.

I'm signing because the mental health care system is broken and needs urgent repair.

Toni, 3145.

I'm signing because given the roll out of NDIS, Carer's have been left to advocate through a system that is confusing and convoluted, particularly when the application is rejected . I believe that mental health services should be available to all, in order to support a safe, fully funded and inclusive mental health service.

Kirsty, 3977.

I'm signing because I I care for my husband who has a mental illness & I believe we could have a much better mental health service

Denise, 3280.

The system TRAUMATISED my daughter for 20 years(so far).

Genny, 3161.

Services have to improve and look like being deleted instead!

Eleanor, 3143.

I'm signing because My daughter needs all the help we can give her and it’s not fair on other families who are also struggling to cope .

Shane , 4053.

I'm signing because I am affected by this issue

Kristy , 4053.

I'm signing because it is imperative that our mental health services are vastly improved for the benefit of consumers, their families and other carers; that professional mental health workers are better trained and supported in their professional capacities. In the long run, this will also be of benefit to governments, because at present , the failure of decent mental health services means that far too many people have become homeless or are in prison, or need far too many psychiatric hospital admissions. These latter services are extremely costly; much more costly than appropriate care in the community

Margaret, 3054.

I'm signing because I believe that Victoria would benefit from a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system that is available to everyone in the Victorian population.

Caroline, 3150.

I'm signing because I am concerned at how little funding and services there are available to people affected by mental illness. With the transition of the NDIS in Victoria there will be fewer services available to fund mental health services which will result in thousands of people being left without any supports which will result in increased admissions to hospital, crime and suicides.

Tali , 3021.

I'm signing because I believe Victoria deserves a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system. Community Mental Health Services and Carer Support Services are invaluable to so many. The NDIS has fractured these exclusive services and lost hundreds of dedicated mental health workers in its wake this has left so many vulnerable people out in the cold, it's a disgrace!!

Liz, 3371.

I'm signing because I am appalled at the current mental health system and the impact of the NDIS on community health services. It will only be through funding mental health in the same way as physical health that the sytem will be adequate.

Nyorie, 3199.

Human rights for the mentally ill.

Eleanor, 3143.

I'm signing because the current mental health system in Victoria is in complete disarray. Community services have been dismantled and in the process the loss of a large number of trained mental health staff has been a tragedy. In- patient units are under extreme pressure and admissions can be almost more traumatising than denial of service....however, to turn away individuals desperate for help happens in no other field of medicine and is a disgrace. Services are severely underfunded and are completely inadequate. Drug and alcohol facilities are very poorly integrated within the system.

Penny, 3205.

I'm signing because Victoria needs community mental health services that are provided outside the NDIS. People are losing their supports, others are falling through the cracks, clinical services are already strained, and it is a recipe for crisis. Community mental health services such as MHCSS and PHAMS are being closed, and are supposed to be being replaced by NDIS services. However, it is becoming clear that the majority of people who have mental illness, including very debilitating and disabling illness, are not going to be eligible or able to access the NDIS. Community mental health services such as PHAMS have provided a cheap solution to the problems of an overburdened clinical mental health system. They have been invaluable to many individuals who would otherwise be utterly isolated, and have provided the mental health help that has prevented many people from reaching an acute level of illness. PLEASE fund community mental health, outside of NDIS. NDIS is not a sufficient replacement for community mental health services.

Vivienne, 3020.

I'm signing because I want necessary community mental health supports available for everyone who needs it.

Simon, 3134.

I'm signing because I strongly believee Victorians deserves a safe, fully funded, fair and inclusive mental health system

Manik, 3174.

I'm signing because in a first world country our mental health system should be so well funded that those with disadvantage are not further disadvantaged by failures in the mental health system. Let's have a system that enables people, that enables them to realistically aspire to live a full a life.

Chris, 3191.

I'm signing because there still needs to be access to community mental health for those in need. We can't expect people to wait months upon months for treatment or wait until people are at their worst to receive treatment.

Braiden, 3216.

I'm signing because Tandems advocacy campaign represents the goals I want for improving mental health carer support throughout Victoria.

Matthew, 3184.

I'm signing because I believe everyone deserves to live a life of fulfillment.

Julia, 3013.

I'm signing because I believe Victoria deserves a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system.

Patricia, 3030.

I'm signing because mental health carers deserve all the support and recognition they can get.

Katrina, 3825.

I'm signing because it is shameful that in Australia, where general health outcomes are excellent, outcomes within the mental health system are behind many third world outcomes and victims often leave our mental 'health services' traumatized and unable to find help within our (so-called) sophisticated health system.

Judi, 3162.

I’m signing because I believe Victoria deserves a safe, funded, inclusive and fair mental health system.

Zoe, 3013.

I'm signing because there are many reasons for signing this. We need a better service, families need to be included in the treatment and recovery journey. NDIS is not doing enough to include all clients and their carers who are all falling through the gaps.

Judy, 3910.

I'm signing because family and friends of consumers should be acknowledged and respected in their caring journey.

Robbert, 3182.

I'm signing because mental health support has been inadequate for too long

Lindy, 3461.

I'm signing because enough is enough! Family members need to be recognized for the vital role they can play in the recovery of the person they support and love. This cant happen without staff believing this work is supported by their services and is core business! Just throwing money at the system wont change anything on the ground lets see targeted change and investment PLEASE??

Marie, 3113.

I'm signing because we’ve had 20 years of trying to get help for our daughter who had to put herself in very dangerous situations to survive until her family was able to talk to Drs and clinicians. Our lives have been turned upside down and our financial future has been decimated because of our broken mental health system. It’s doesn’t care about our loved ones and it doesn’t care for the people that are supporting their loved ones when our useless mental health system is failing us.

Judy, 3910.

I'm signing because I have seen first hand, the inter-generational trauma caused by gaps in the current system. Expectations on families place them in situations of physical and emotional risk, in an unsustainable way. We must do better.

Tania , 3103.

I'm signing because I want families, friends and other supporters of consumers respectfully included in the recovery journey in services.

Murray, 4567.

I'm signing because I believe Victoria deserves a safe and effective mental health system.

Andrew, 3067.

Investment is made to deliver effective and vital treatment in the community. Re-building our community mental health sector to provide preventative and therapeutic treatment for the 90,000 Victorians who need it outside the clinical system or the NDIS.

Gary, 3322.

I'm signing because I'm greatly concerned that Victoria's community mental health services have all but been destroyed by transfer of funds to NDIS.

Colin, 3182.
